All The Way Home

“If homelessness were an illness, we’d be demanding a cure, never mind a vaccine.”

The idea of a home is not only associated with shelter but also to the feeling of comfort. The fact that you can be your vulnerable self surrounded by your loved ones is a privilege that is often taken for granted.

The Rock Trust is a society that is committed to serve the homeless section of Scotland. According to recent reports, nearly 80,000 households were classified as homeless. Instead of turning a blind eye to this crisis or waiting for the system to act, we as a society must come together to take the homeless population off the streets.

“We all need to take responsibility for mending the broken bits of our society.”

The group housing societies provided them the much needed support and companionship. A social worker from The Rock Trust would guide them regarding various ways of sustaining themselves like managing finances, cooking, career planning, mental health etc.

The essays, the poems, opinions were a reflection of the time when they had no roof over their head, scarce food to eat, little or no social interaction, and even when they felt no sense of belonging. It takes immense courage to write personal essays, to bare your heart & soul while narrating your vulnerabilities.

Reading about their struggles of moving back and forth between various B&B, their pathetic maintenance was an eye-opener for me. It was heartening to read an essay where the members were reciting Haikus from a book, sitting around a table. A story where a child is coming to terms with his estranged mother’s death, made me realize the importance of social services.

‘All the Way Home’ encapsulates the experience of the homeless population through self-expression and art. People supported by The Rock Trust document their experiences before and after being introduced to the organisation.
