“It is the present. We are in the past now. Hard to believe, isn’t it?”

Stoned: The Untold Story of CO-Weed20

History repeated itself during the pandemic and we were scavenging for essentials. Life came to a standstill when Covid-19 became part of our life and slowly masks, hand sanitizers, gloves found their way to our designer handbags or ones from Sarojini Nagar.

The story is narrated in Amar’s pov who’s trapped in a time machine built by his friend and roommate Mohit. Contrary to the meaning of his name, he has 12 hours to save the world and to right his wrongs. Amar has to find the antidote before the time runs out. After consuming a magical ingredient, he goes on to narrate his ordeal through a VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) which transmits data to a black box.

Amar prepared the magical ingredient in low flame but due to the penetration of carbon monoxide(CO), he named it CO-Wd5. Five because of its variants, each one serving a different purpose. Identifying people and their nature is his superpower.

How CO-Wd5 became CO-Wd20 which has put people to sleep is a mystery that will unravel (or unroll) on paper.

It is difficult to categorise this book as it has elements of science fiction, sarcasm, realism, romance and the magical ingredient – ‘Sarcasm’. The chapters are titled backwards starting from the number 12. The central character refers to ordinary utensils as apparatus, bomb suit as a PPE kit, pirated Adidas shoes as Abidas, and himself as a prisoner no-101 in his white-collared job. There are so many lines and dialogues that made me chuckle and even contemplate the world at large.

“In real life, changing the world and people is not as easy as baking your cake and eating it too.”

Stoned: The Untold Story of CO-Weed20

‘Stoned’ is a delightful concoction of realism, science fiction, fantasy, music and philosophy. Something that will smack your head or even make you smile.
